Automated Accountability
You can lead a horse to water but you got to make sure they drink
Learning management systems often fail because content distribution doesn't guarantee engagement. At Learn.co, the focus was on actual completion. The strategy involved breaking every activity required of you into simple tasks that could be monitored and automated.
70%+ Completion Rate
While most online platforms struggle with single-digit completion, Learn.co achieved over 70% by separating curriculum from task completion tracking.
Task Types
Tasks had various categories covering both educational and administrative requirements for student success:
- DocuSign document signing
- Slack joining
- Surveys
- Course completion percentages
- Lab completion
- Blog writing
- And more...
Automated Everything
An automation layer ensured students received credit only when they genuinely completed tasks through API integrations.
Example: Three Things Activity
Students daily completed a Typeform/Google Form with three questions:
- What's one thing you know today that you didn't know yesterday?
- What's one thing you're going to do better tomorrow?
- What's one thing someone else did for you today?
Credit was granted only upon actual submission, verified through the form's API.
Checklist Templates
Templates automated checklist assignment across student lifecycle phases, from onboarding through job search phases. Some assigned automatically (like enrollment triggers), others manually by coaches/instructors.
The Job Search Activity checklist was particularly effective, assigned weekly post-graduation to structure job search activities systematically.
Monitor, Measure, Review
Reporting views tracked progress, showing students actively working, completed-but-needing-review, and overdue status. Tasks supported feedback mechanisms for code review and interview notes.
The Impact
The system clarified expectations, reduced student burden through automatic tracking, and enabled scalable review workflows supporting student success.
By making accountability automatic rather than manual, we freed up coaches to focus on what matters: actually helping students learn and succeed.
